Guantanamo Judge Denies Obama's Request for Delay

Fri, 01/30/2009 - 3:57pm

Fast Day 9: The Mall and Obama, again

Mon, 01/19/2009 - 3:15pm

processionThis morning the fasters went down to the Mall and vigiled at the White House and the Treasury. Reaction was by-and-large positive. One young woman stopped her friends to watch our vigil and said, over and over, "This is love! This is love right here! This is what I'm talking about, y'all! This is love!"

As we were walking home, the police started shutting down the street, and sure enough, the motorcade drove by again.

Fast Day 8 - two vigils

Sun, 01/18/2009 - 11:53pm

bannerToday, Sunday, 8 of us joined the throngs going to the Inaugural concert on the Mall. However, rather than sporting Obama tee shirts, flags and posters, seven of us wore orange jumpsuits and black hoods and one wore a "Shut Guantanamo" tee shirt. The reception from the celebratory crowd was surprisingly positive with nearly everyone offering supportive comments and taking thousands of photos of our little band marching through the crowd in silent procession. One highlight of the concert itself (with top Hollywood and musical stars) was Pete Seeger at the end singing some of the more radical verses from "This Land is My Land" with Bruce Springsteen.

The Detainees

Of the 779 people who have been detained at the United States military prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, at least 520 have been transferred and approximately 250 remain, according to the Department of Defense. In addition, five detainees died while in custody. The Pentagon has declined to release a list of the detainees currently at Guantánamo. By reviewing thousands of pages of government documents, court records and news media reports, The New York Times was able to compile its own approximate list.
