Fast Day 8 - two vigils

Sun, 01/18/2009 - 11:53pm

bannerToday, Sunday, 8 of us joined the throngs going to the Inaugural concert on the Mall. However, rather than sporting Obama tee shirts, flags and posters, seven of us wore orange jumpsuits and black hoods and one wore a "Shut Guantanamo" tee shirt. The reception from the celebratory crowd was surprisingly positive with nearly everyone offering supportive comments and taking thousands of photos of our little band marching through the crowd in silent procession. One highlight of the concert itself (with top Hollywood and musical stars) was Pete Seeger at the end singing some of the more radical verses from "This Land is My Land" with Bruce Springsteen.

bannerMeanwhile, about 20 people gathered at dusk for a traffic vigil at the jammed entranceway to DC the Key Bridge in Arlington, VA. Nearly 5,000 passersby strove by folks wearing jumpsuits, hoods and holding candles, signs and banners. Many took pictures of us; others honked their horns in support; and a few yelled hostile remarks.
